Sustainability

Vacations for the climate

Clear water lakes, forest moors, near-natural river meadows and rare animal and plant species – in the Uckermark, nature and landscape conservation areas cover more than half of the area. We would like to preserve these refuges permanently. It is virtually obvious to make tourism development more sustainable. In 2012/13, the Uckermark emerged as the winner of the first federal competition “Sustainable Tourism Regions”. For us still award and incentive at the same time!

For us, sustainability means enabling our guests to enjoy nature-based tourism and lasting natural and cultural experiences in the Uckermark. The region itself and the people should participate and experience added value. We are committed to developing sustainable mobility solutions in rural areas as well.

As a guest of the travel region, “our” way can be actively supported: Staying in climate-friendly accommodations, preferring products from the region, treating nature with care, traveling by train, bike, canoe or on foot.

Sustainable destination

Since February 2018, the Uckermark has been certified as a Sustainable Destination by TourCert. With the seal we acknowledge our responsibility for sustainable tourism. Our management and reporting system complies with the TourCert certification standard and is audited by an independent assessor every three years.

Already in 2014, the mission statement for a sustainable tourism region Uckermark was developed together with the providers and tourism stakeholders. It forms the basis for further tourism development

in the region.

Detailed information on sustainability activities in the Uckermark travel region and in the office of tmu Tourismus Marketing Uckermark GmbH are summarized in the current Sustainability Report 2020. The report is revised regularly as part of the recertification process as a Sustainable Destination.

In the "Holidays for the climate" network

Hosts and leisure providers who are particularly committed to climate protection and sustainability can become partners in the “Holidays for the Climate” network. The aim of the initiative is to design high-quality and attractive offers for our guests and to develop the region sustainably together. All providers in the network have, among other things, anchored responsible action in their corporate philosophy, obtain 100% green electricity, support guests in an environmentally friendly arrival and departure, and work together with regional partners.

Brandenburg MoorFutures project

Peatlands not only provide habitats for a wide variety of animal and plant species, but are also important CO2 reservoirs. In the constantly wet, low-oxygen environment, organic substances cannot be completely decomposed – along with the plant remains, the carbon stored in them also sinks to the ground and is permanently bound in the peat layer. The climate-neutral hosts in the Uckermark compensate their unavoidable emissions via the regional project MoorFutures. For the greenhouse gases generated in their company, they acquire a corresponding amount of these “peat shares.” The revenues from the MoorFutures are used to finance the rewetting of moorland in Brandenburg. In this way, our hosts not only help the climate, but also support regional nature conservation at the same time. With MoorFutures, the compensation of your vacation trip does not take place somewhere on the other side of the world, but vividly directly on site.

The stations Angermünde, Prenzlau, Schwedt, Templin and Fürstenberg/Havel are served from Berlin almost continuously every hour. Have a good trip!
